Powershell – AD – Installing and using the Active-Directory Module locally

The Active Directory module is easily one of the most essential modules for Powershell that provides incredible functionality in regards to managing your AD environment.

Installation Steps

  1. Windows 10 – Download and install the Remote Server Administration Tools(stored here as at 09/02/2017).
  2. Reboot your machine.


Attempt one of the Active-Directory commandlets, eg. Get-ADUser. It should automatically import the module. If not you can run “Import-Module  ActiveDirectory”.

Use the below command to show you all available commands that you can now begin to use.


Get-Command | where {$_.Source -eq "ActiveDirectory"}
